The Story Behind The Picture: Shaken Not Stirred

As part of Electric's exclusive new partnership with Getty Images Gallery, we reveal the hidden story behind some of the iconic photographs in the exhibition. Here we look at the story behind a classic black and white image of the English actor Roger Moore.

Roger Moore was a man who was destined to play James Bond. And this very Bond-esque photograph was taken on July 17th 1968 by photographer Peter Ruck who had accompanied Moore to an awards ceremony held by German entertainment magazine Bravo.

For most of the mid-sixties, Roger Moore had been playing the lead role in a globally-popular TV spy thriller series, The Saint. It was Moore’s second consecutive Bravo “Otto” award for Most Popular Television Actor, so he had much to celebrate that evening.

Both actor and photographer always claimed that this photograph was candid and unposed, but it did capture the essence of a man who would soon be named as 007, ultimately appearing in seven Bond films starting with 1973’s Live And Let Die.
